Dialectical Behavioral Therapy for individuals or groups

DBT Therapy

Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT)

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) helps people recognize unhelpful thought and behavior patterns and replace them with healthier coping strategies. DBT combines individual therapy and group skills training, both of which are essential for meaningful change.

The evidence-based skills taught are grouped in the following models:

  • Mindfulness-increasing awareness of the present moment

  • Distress Tolerance -learning strategies to manage crises and reduce impulsive reactions

  • Interpersonal Effectiveness-improving communication and relationships

  • Emotion Regulation-understanding and managing emotions

Clients may also receive phone coaching between sessions for real-time support in applying DBT skills during challenging moments.

Multi-Family DBT Skills Group (Online)

Multi-Family DBT Skills Groups bring together youth and their parents or caregivers to learn the same set of evidence-based skills. By building a shared language, families are better able to support one another as the youth practices applying skills in daily life. The group setting also provides a built-in support system for both youth and caregivers.

Unlike traditional group therapy, DBT skills groups are structured more like a classroom, with interactive teaching, discussion, and practice. Group members are guided on how to share in ways that are supportive and respectful, without going into details that may be triggering for others.

Skills covered in the group focus on:

  • Managing strong emotions and emotional dysregulation

  • Reducing impulsive and self-harming behaviors

  • Strengthening relationships and communication

DBT Consultation Team

In order to adhere to the DBT model, the therapist meets and consults with other DBT trained therapists weekly to discuss approaches, techniques, treatment recommendations, and to ensure DBT protocols are being followed as intended.
